I'm such a Marketing major...

Thanks to my professor Shayne Clarke, I now have a new fascination with social media. It started out with an assignment to write weekly in this blog, followed by a challenge to join Twitter.

I did not understand Twitter at first, or why I should use it, but now I'm definitely beginning to see its benefits. You can communicate with celebs and learn more about the social climate of the world. You can involve lots of people in your conversation and even get a heads up on sales and promotions in your favorite companies.

I also just discovered this social media series called the Mormon Bachelorette. Its like a TV show, but it uses a combination of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Blogger to "run" the show. I'm totally fascinated by how you can now have your own series just by using social media!

I'm also on LinkedIn, which is a professional networking site. You can post your resume and connect to classmates and coworkers. I can see how it would be a very handy tool to network with while you are looking for a job.

I am also just discovering Pinterest. If you don't have one, JOIN. It has changed my life. Basically its a collection of pictures that you can "pin" to your board and comment on what you think about them. I currently have a board for my future wedding (because I'm a girl and I think about that a lot), inspiring quotes and pictures, and a board for my business and my favorite products. Its like an online scrapbook of ideas.

I have also just joined Google+. It's very similar to Facebook but it borrows some of the ideas from Twitter, but the best part is the circles. You can put your friends into groups called "circles" and choose what you share with them. You can even have a circle called "followers" where you just follow celebs. I think Google just might take over the internet with Google+. Let me know if you want an invite, I have a few of those left.

Social media had completely changed the marketing industry. To market to my generation, you can't use the standard TV, radio or newspaper ads. You have to have a viral video on YouTube or a catchy page on Facebook to get attention. It is incredible how technology has totally changed how our society works.

So if you want to stay in the loop, I suggest you join Twitter. Follow me, there's a button on the top left side of my page that links you to it. They say it takes you to follow about 100 people before you fully understand how Twitter works, so just start following everyone. If you're too scared of Twitter, then join Pinterest. You can sign in with your Facebook account and it will instantly connect you with your friends. If you are feeling really daring, please start your own blog. You can use mine as an example, because you can blog about basically anything you want. Its freeing to do so, actually.

And yes, I am a marketing student and I love my major. Can't you tell? :)
