Puddles and Oceans

I actually hate the phrase "you can't judge a book by it's cover." It's cliche, overused, and most people don't know what it actually means.

I like to think of people as puddles or oceans. There is something very different happening on the surface then there is underneath. Everyone has a story. And one of my favorite things to do is get into people's stories. Maybe that's why I love marketing so much, because I love learning about the roots of people's motivations.

For example. I just met a person who is a puddle but likes to pretend to be an ocean. He first struck me as a charismatic, perceptive person with very deep pockets. On the second go around I found out that he loves worldly things and uses people to make him look good. He loves to spend money and look rich when he doesn't actually have anything.

And then there's me. I'm a ocean who gets mistaken for a puddle. I am goofy, and I love being silly and making people laugh. I'm giggly, I'm bubbly. But because I am also blonde, I am accused of being ditzy a lot. I AM smart, thank you very much. I was one of the youngest people accepted into the Marriott School of Management and I'm going to graduate in just three years and I have kept my academic scholarship throughout my schooling. Does that sound like someone who is ditzy to you?!?

Lesson learned: first impressions may be crucial, but you won't learn anything about someone until you jump in and go deeper. You may just make a splash in a one inch puddle and quickly step out, or you may dive into a whole new perspective you couldn't imagine before.
